Queen's College.

3rd, June, 1898.

In connexion with C.9.0.No.1139,I have the

honour to submit for the consideration of His Excellency the

Acting Governor, that for reasons given below, it would appear

advisable to ask the Secretary of State whether he would be

pleased to invite the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford to nominate

at the end of the year, a candidate for the new mastership

recently added to the Estimates.

The Vice-Chancellor informed me, by last mail

that Mr. Hodgson, having received his appointment from Downing Street, would be on his way out, before the letter reached me.

The Secretary of State does not therefore ob-

ject to a University man, per se.

The appointment of a University man is con- fessedly an experiment, and should therefore have the advan- tage of all possible favourable circumstances.

I think the presence of another Assistant Mas-

ter from Oxford might go far to reconcile the earlier arrival to the new surroundings and feeling of exile, which generally

cause dissatisfaction during the first year or two of resi-

dence in this distant Colony. Hon. T. Sercombe Smith,L.L.B.

Acting Colonial Secretary.
